You could maybe share a diorama of a habitat from your favorite animal. Or you could discuss how the salmon leave for the ocean as baby fish and return as adults. If you live where there are salmon, like I do, you could even take a field trip with family to see salmon in the fall as they return to spawn. One time we actually saw a salmon finding a spot to lay eggs. Nature is so amazing and when we are able to use a story to help enhance that, it’s a bonus. </span><span style="font-size: large;"> <span style="font-size: xx-small;"></span></span><br />

Yes! Pull out that old shoe box, the glue sticks, paints, crayons , bits of sticks, pebbles, felt, whatever you are inclined to use (good reason to go on a nature hike!) and create a diorama!</span></span><br />

</span> <span style="font-size: large;">First step is to think about the perfect book, scene chapter, etc., that you want to create! Next pull out a bit of paper and begin to “sketch” what you want to do. Are there swing sets, a pirate ship, or a deserted island in the back ground? Maybe you have a lake and mountain and a speeding boat in the back ground? Well you want to be sure to know what you need to do and the order you need to do it in! Third, take the lid off the shoe box. You might need to cut this off (if you are younger than 16 I would make sure Mom or Dad –or another grown up is in the house and OK with you undertaking this project!). Don’t throw the lid away though! It’s sturdy and can be used for your characters! More about that later!</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Four. Now that we have the lid off the shoe box, gather all your supplies and lay them out in a place you can find them. When that is done, make sure the table is protected, Now, this next step is important; lay the box on its side. Once it’s on its side you can really visualize how things will be shaping up. You can paint, draw, color, etc., the back and sides of the inside of your box. Are you creating a park, maybe a lake where a Dad and his daughter, or son, is fishing? You will want to make sure you depict that. But feel free to have a little creative liberty. </span><br />

</span> <span style="font-size: large;">Next, the new bottom (side) of the show box should be painted, designed, glued, taped, or whatever you need to help depict the foreground (the front) of the story. Maybe a dock is jutting out into a lake, or a field of wild flowers is in the foreground…. Let’s see it! Remember you are depicting a story. You want your diorama to tell a story! </span></div>

Markers, crayons, pencils, and some paints are great tools for this. Don’t throw the scraps away just yet though! Make little stands out of them to help position your characters inside your diorama. Before I left for <a href="http://www.kimsusbornebookshelf.com/" target="_blank">UBAM National Convention </a>we decided I needed to move my "office" work space back into the house. Last year I moved out to a storage shed, and while it has been working fine, it was not good for working in the evenings or weekends and leaving the kiddo in the house. Since I returned we have been purging and redoing a few things so I can make the transition back into the house, but this time have a real space, not the kitchen table or a small corner in the bedroom where I can keep Hubs up all night. <br />
<br />
I have turned a 8x8 corner of the family room into "command central" as Hubs calls it. Pictures of that will be forth coming as it is fully completed. BUT the purging, while LONG over due, has taken a LONG time to accomplish, and this is just ONE ROOM. We have donated, hauled off, and otherwise disposed of more than two pick up loads of stuff, I der-say much of it junk. While doing all of this we have redone the floor in the family and dinning room, which was very much needed. The living room will happen AFTER I recover from this purge. it wasn't until the dinning room and family got new flooring that it was plainly seen and decided that the living room was in desperate need as well. Maybe late fall I will take a weekend and we will do the living room.<br />

Callie Cat and Duke have been totally wandering around like we have flipped our lids.<br />

It really hasn't been any more disorganized than before. Adding Gram to the mix changed things a bit, which I am sure to touch on how having your mother in your home can add its onset of complications, but that is for another day. </span></span></span> <span style="background-color: white;">On the home front, we are currently moving things around and Gram has agreed to divest our home of many small items that stack up and create a big mess, of course, a family of four with the gene for hanging onto things long past their use is difficult. I made the hard choice last night to toss all of Bear's old birthday cards. Really, what was I keeping them for? You would be very proud of my resolve. <br />

I have been using Sunday's to mentally plan the big anchor tasks for the week and menu ideas. This week we are having:</span><br />
<ul><li>Lasagna </li>
<li>Hobo Meal (Potatoes and Beans with Franks)--it sounded good.</li>
<li>Goulash</li>
<li>Breakfast</li>
<li>Pizza-- Because Friday should always be Pizza right?</li>
</ul>That is a lot of meal planning for me. In the past, I have tried to create 4-6 weeks of rotating meals, and it has proven a headache and unsustainable. I know my limitations! Instead of viewing this as a failure I decided to adapt and do what does work with my life, my abilities, and my family. Welcome Sunday week planning. I am not micro-planning, but planning my anchor tasks, and then each night I am planning the large things the next day and keeping my lists short. I am rebooting our eating.<br />

I need this to crash course to push us into a healthier eating life. Food is not the enemy, but our relationship with it might be unhealthy. I know it is. If I can't do a project without the reward of a pop and candy bar, then my relationship with food is likely not healthy. <br />
<br />
The idea when the 30 days is up, is that we will morph it into a "WHOLE FOOD" lifestyle, meaning less processed foods. I am not saying we will never eat processed foods because hey, we like going out to eat, and we like having occasional treats, but 90% of what we eat needs to be recognizable and pronounceable food.<br />
<br />
What is the Whole 30? I am still learning but you can find out the basics at this web link, <a href="http://whole30.com/whole30-program-rules/" target="_blank">Whole 30</a>. <br />
<br />
I hope you enjoy the next 30 days as I share my thoughts, concerns, temptations, dilemmas, and the end result .... in the course I will find that I have accomplished something I said was hard, even impossible. Yeah, its going to be hard, but its going to be a great sense of accomplishment as well.<br />

Have you been there? I know I have. But once you get to the place it doesn't mean you give up, it means it's time to do a systems check and REBOOT.<br />
<br />
Here are ten ways to reboot the day or week (heck, month maybe? I know I have been there). <br />

<li><b>Go outside</b>. Just grab a coat and head out the door. Of
course the littles need to come too. Go to the park, yes even if its
raining (that's what rain coats and hats are for). Go to the beach, this time of year it will be your own private escape. If you have the
forethought, pack a thermos of hot cocoa to enjoy and ward off a little
bit of a chill. Even half an hour can do wonders. </li>
<li><b>Call it an early night</b>. Make an early night of it. The day
has been going down hill all day and the steam engine is screaming at
lightening speed, just figure you will eat cereal and toast for dinner.
Get each child into a warm bath. Pull out a feel good family movie and
grab blankets and pile everyone on the couch. Watch a movie and
cuddle. The cuddles make the world feel just a little bit more normal
again.</li>
<li><b>Make meatloaf</b>. I have no idea why, but meatloaf makes
everyone happier. Meatloaf like they made it back before everyone
decided it was boring. Spices and garlic and oh yeah a yummy sauce on
top.... </li>
<li><b>Add water and paper</b>... If you are home alone or your kids are older, take a bath, pick out a book and figure its quiet time for an hour or so. </li>
<li><b>Bake cookies</b>. A spice cookie, oatmeal cookie... even a
chocolate chip cookie can slow everyone down. just one batch.... if
you don't feel like baking more than a dozen or so, the dough will keep a
few days in the fridge, or freeze them for the next time you need the smell of baking cookies in the house.</li>
<li><b>Get Organized</b>. Sometimes we need to get organized to relax.
But don't take that to the extreme. Organize one thing. Hang a key
rack, write birthdays on a calendar, something small that can make a
difference. I use to lose the basement keys ALL the time. I hung a key
hook/rack and it has helped tremendously. It not fancy, just a piece
of molding left over from the kitchen that I put a few hooks into.</li>
<li><b>Time Out</b>. Yep, mommy time out. Hopefully you can get all
the littles into a quiet time and you take a time out. Read, pray,
whatever you need to do. </li>
<li><b>Put music on and dance.</b> Put on something fun, has a beat and sing and dance, with the kiddos. It will leave everyone in giggles.</li>
<li><b>Go off grid....</b> Turn off the phone, computer.. all those
devices which "connect" us and get back into a real connection with
people. Go for a walk in the mall, let the kids play in the play area
while you have a coffee or coke and relax. Kids don't need constant
adult intervention. Yeah we need to make sure they don't disappear or
kill each other, but we don't need to have our fingers in the pie all the time
either. </li>
<li><b>Practice realism.</b> Make real goals for yourself. Forget what you think everyone else does, make realistic goals for you and your family. </li>
</ol>

It has been so long since I have published in Garden Tenders. Life has been full. I will update soon, but here are a few things I have learned more fully....<br />
<ul>
<li>Everything happens for a purpose. We may not know it or understand it but there is a deep purpose to it.</li>
<li>God is in all things, even trouble and turmoil, all you have to do is call upon His name.</li>
<li>I never considered myself a leader, but I do think God is putting me in places for this to happen. I know I am not a follower, I think too much outside the box for that.</li>
<li>Worry about tomorrow will hinder your today. This is something I am still working on, but its so true. God wants each of us to lean on him and cast our worries at the foot of the cross.</li>
</ul>

Bear was blessed with rich learning experiences that traditionally schooled children would never have access to. </i></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
The things that occupied our time when scribbling was was the norm and cuddles on moms lap was still cool.</span></span> <br />

<li><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Sensory Bins: </b>These are bins that I fill with a wide range of textures and items. We have used baking soda, bubbles (water and dish soap), shaving cream, rice, corn meal, beans.... really the limits are your imagination Then I toss a few fun items in the mix and a small garden shovel for kids (like what you get with plastic buckets) and let the children dig, scoop and more. If you have the space and inclination you could get a water wheel and let the little ones use it as well. Funnels are a fun toy to use in the bins too.</span></span> </li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Paper time:</b> This is time we have with paper and scissors. Crayons and glue are generally married to it as well.</span></span> </li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Stickers</b>: 'Nough said. </span></span> </li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Play dough: </b> Be sure you have some cookie cutters, rolling pins (you can find them reasonably priced at stores like Target, but be sure to not forget looking in the Dollar Store) and if you can get your child to do it, a sheet of wax paper or butcher paper for working on. Sometimes this works for me if I think about it.</span></span> </li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Small easy craft projects.</b> Things that require cutting easy straight and slightly curved lines for littles are best. Complicated cuts should be kept for the older children. Stringing beads, using pasta and glue, using colored sand and glue on a paper plate, etc. Again the opportunities are limited only by your imagination. just remember to keep it within the scope of your child's abilities.</span></span> </li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Old cards and magazines can be used to make collages.</b> One could even do one that would be specific to a certain unit or event. </span></span> </li>

It has no need to resemble a tree to you, in her eyes it tells a whole story and what she is looking for from you is validation and enjoyment in her creative self; have her tell you the story it tells. <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"> In our home "art" products are easy to be had often and that is another key to allowing creativity to flow. When Bear was younger during her preschool and kinder years (and younger still!) I would often have our coffee table covered with butcher paper so impromptu art projects weren't very messy. When the paper is completely used you can remove it and replace it with something new. I use the blue ore green painters tape to attach the paper to the table, and trust me that painters tape is your best friend.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;">Once a month I will be exploring books and corresponding crafts as we continue on our educational journey and continuing on with our "after-school" learning adventures. Next month, I will be looking at a fun craft for Valentines Day. Some months we will be looking at Nature Studies, some months science and others reading helps! We all are bright and
capable people, we just need to encourage a love for learning and
doing. We need to try to do things, even if they are hard. Why do we go about setting goals we already know we can attain? I am guilty. GUILTY. <br />
<br />
Each of us are creative beings, but society puts restraints
on us, shackling us into their confines and ideas of what is and isn't beauty.
We are constantly being told what is and isn't good. Why do we feel we have to color within the lines? Shouldn't we set goals that stretch us beyond those lines? Goals should stretch us, and make us leap. We need to
open our minds and step out of the box that someone else
put us in. Goals are something we should set high, and they require work. <br />

<br />I am busy making plans for what to create for the February Barter Fair here on the KP. What will Promise Farms have to share in the middle of winter? Nature Bags, Chicken Goodies, Doggie Goodies, bread, and later on very possibly flavored adult beverages. But in the meantime, we dream and set goals, making a leap and stretching ourselves. Taking action and actively working toward our dream. <br />

Its one of the most fun artsy things to pull out on a rainy mid-winter day. Paper and chalk... total artistic license to create and have loads of fun with. I don't share much of what he's doing.... I make comments every so
often, but he is always here in the background. Grounding me, lavishing
encouragement, helping me to see another side.... <strong>He makes me complete</strong>.
I know, I know.... in our modern age, telling someone, much less the
universe (or at least a handful of readers) that I wasn't complete
before I met and married my husband is about equal with someone saying
they kick old dogs in their free time. <br />
<br />
I am taking this space today, these few minutes it will take me to write
about him, and devoting it to him. When I say he is awesome, he is.
I'm not just whistling Dixie and trying to prove something. Anyone who
knows him knows the truth. Is he perfect? No. But he is the man that
completes my life. <br />
<br />
<em><strong>Hubs is calm where I am like wild rapids</strong></em>. He truly does ground me. <br />
<br />
When family squabbles occur between my siblings and I rather than
goading (as one SIL is want to do) he steps back and attempts to get
reason to reign again .... and waits. He knows that I will calm again
and with his calming presence I will do it more quickly. He is right to
do this. I know he understands me, sees my side, but he also knows
that getting involved in family dynamics that he wasn't brought up in is
pointless. The best thing he can do is be the calm life raft that I
can reach for. When I reach for it, he can then pull me to safety. My
youngest brother should realize the man he puts down as weak is a much
greater and stronger man than he will ever be. <br />
<br />
<strong><em>Hubs is a great father. </em></strong>Bear adores him and
will run and greet him at the door. Each morning she requests her kiss
before he leaves. He encourages her in her adventures. He teaches her
about things I could never even fathom being important. But he also
teaches her how to change spark plugs, tie knots, throw a ball, and catch
the football. He gives her a side of life I could never give her
alone. She is learning what a good man is, how a good man treats his
wife and family. My prayer is that she finds a man like her daddy one
day. A man that understands what family is and how important his role
is in it. <br />
<br />
<strong><em>He is consistent.</em></strong> In love. In Discipline when its needed. <br />
<br />
<em><strong>He works very hard at a job that is tough</strong>,</em> and
still comes home to deal with crying females on days that have went to
you know where and a hand basket. Just his entering the room Bear
knows.... His calmness permeates everything. REALLY. In all the years
we have been together he has only raised his voice once while upset,
that I can recall. It was enough that I was immediately shocked into
stunned silence. <br />
<br />
I wish he could do more of what he wants to do. I wish with all my heart he could. <em><strong>He has never said he is upset or disappointed in not having his single days back</strong></em>. <u><strong>NEVER</strong></u>.
Some men go around and say they still need to be with the guys and they
insist on doing all or many of the things they did when they were
single... Not Hubs. I have told him I have no problem if he wants to, I
understand the need to completely relax, but he has rarely went out
with the "guys". He says he has more fun going out with his family. He
asks for so little, his greatest desire is for his family to be happy
and healthy. <strong> I wish he could have everything he wants, and he says he already has it.</strong> <br />
<br />
He thinks I am a great cook, gifted writer (HA!), talented artist, and
the best lover in the world. I am humbled. I am in awe still that God
directed our lives to find each other. It was through God. If I had
never became a Christian, I would have never met my husband, nor he
I.... I can see God's hand in our lives, and for that I am eternally
grateful. <br />
<br />
<strong><em>Hubs is my best friend and he will readily admit I am his.</em></strong><br />
<br />
So here I am, a fairly modern educated woman, admitting that I am not
complete without my husband. I am not ashamed. I am honored and
humbled that one so perfect for me cherishes me and loves me. I am
proud to take his name, keep his home, raise his child, and love him. <br />
<br />
In October we celebrated 10 years of marriage. I am not saying that every year has been a honeymoon, but he still can make me feel butterflies, he still is my knight, he still is who I want to fall asleep next to. I love him. <br />

1) Organize my computer desk area; its become a catch all and totally not user friendly <i>currently.</i><br />
2) Organize my sewing area. Over November and December it got a bit out of hand. It needs to be tidied up a but, well OK, a lot!<br />
3) Go through clothes and get ready to donate or toss all those unneeded.</blockquote>
I decided to tackle number 1 first. I needed to because I work from home a lot with my Usborne Book business (oh you can see my web <a href="http://www.kimsusbornebookshelf.com/" target="_blank"> site here if you are curious about Usborne Books & More!</a>). <br />

Without further ado.... here is a before picture.... I am embarrassed to even admit my desk, which is located in my bedroom no less, looked like this. Horrible and embarrassing! How can I encourage and lead other woman when my own home is littered and full of chaos. I do believe when you home is messy, I mean cluttered and messy, depression creeps in and with depression comes so many of the other things. Things like grouchy moms, biting comments from a wife toward her spouse, anger at people, pettiness, and just generally a shrewish woman. <br />
<br />
This is why the 3in3o is so important. This is my journey and thus begins my journey back from that messy abyss. <br />

Now I have to admit, I still need to sort receipts and paperwork in my box, but at least they are all in one place. That will be a task later in the month I think. This was actually a two day task. Four trash bags later and I am happy with the end result. I was actually able to help a Literacy Army member last night with a order at my desk. Right this minute I created a to do list for the weekend, and tomorrow or so I will be purchasing a calendar for quick glances as I am working. I am ready! So if you chat with me on the phone, I am likely sitting here, with a view out the front, looking at pictures of my family while I help you with strategy as you fight illiteracy in your own way.<br />

<b><span style="font-size: large;">S</span></b>ometimes the easiest way to accomplish needed tasks and goals are to take them in small bits and work to accomplish them, one bit by one bit at a time.<br />

<b>The 3 in 30 is simply picking three goals and working on completing them in thirty days</b>. For example, de-cluttering a counter top, going through and organizing a computer file system, dusting the cobwebs away from every room might be the three goals you set before yourself. They don't need to be <b>earth shattering </b>goals. Just three things you want to accomplish during a given month. <br />

Well, simply it breaks down tasks into bite size chunks. Maybe your goal is to organize your home. Well that sounds great until you roll up your sleeves and attempt to do it. When you break it up into smaller manageable slots of time its easier to reach the end because you don't get overwhelmed. You can pick organizing your cabinets, pantry, bookshelves, or whatever you goal is. Try it, see if it doesn't <i>help you.</i><br />

This last twelve months has taken a toll on me. <b>Its taken an emotional toll and a physical toll</b>. It has <b>left me drained</b> many times. But never have I doubted God's promise to us. While I don't believe in unicorns, I do still hunt for pixies. Maybe this is part of what has kept me from blogging so much. We have had so much going on, some of it so mundane and day to day that no one could possibly want to read about, and the other so exhausting that I have crawled into bed at night weeping with pain, but knowing that pain means I am alive. <br />
<br />
But I never claimed to only blog about unicorns and sunshine, right?<br />
<br />
We put Bear into public school this year. Its been a very hard last year in a half since moving from the old place. Weeks in limbo, followed by a stint in a hotel, and then a brief respite in a apartment before being able to move into what we call our Promised Land. I don't recall the road to the promised land being paved with flowers and ice cream cones, do you? So why should it be any different with us.<br />
<br />
Bear loves school by the way. It's what we need during this season of adjusting. <br />
<br />
Some of the things that have happened since all this started almost two years ago would have many questioning if they were doing God's will. I wont doubt that there have been times I myself have done that, but I look around at the peaceful forest that we are trying to carve our little home out of and I see God's hand. <br />
<br />
Our chickens remind me of how simple life is, how we should look to God for our salvation, not man. This is my biggest goal for 2015, to rejoice in all things.<br />
<br />
It could be worse. We have health, we have a home, we have food. We have more than some. <br />
<br />
I have a young new friend who is just thirty-ish and the first of October she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She has two little boys. She is upbeat and always talking about praise and I have never heard her blame God. It kind of makes you put things in perspective, you know?<br />
<br />
James 1:2-4 says, <i>"Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, <span class="text Jas-1-3" id="en-NASB-30270"><sup class="versenum"> </sup>knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.</span> <span class="text Jas-1-4" id="en-NASB-30271"><sup class="versenum"> </sup>And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." </span></i><br />
<br />
<span class="text Jas-1-4">Yes, God is alive. He cares. Paul in his letter to the Romans wrote, "<i>we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance."</i> (5:3) </span><br />

<span class="text Jas-1-4">And with this thought and verse in mind I look heavenward. I ask for perseverance and peace. </span><br />

We have done so much, so much has happened, and so much has gone on.... Sitting down and writing has been the last thing on my mind most days. Oh its been on my mind, but only when I have been in bed and wondering if I should get up and grab a computer and take "pen to paper" so to speak.<br />

I am here now and I am going to try to keep up to speed better. <br />

So much has happened this fall, not one but TWO trees have fallen and taken out portions of the hen house or chicken run. We are still repairing the chicken run but slower going on it, mostly the weather is causing that, but I am also needing to clear some brush as well. Just today we moved an old utility trailer frame away and next we will work more on taking out the trunk of the tree that fell. A couple of hours in the wet and or cold is all that can be done this time of year. <br />

Did I mention we ended up with more chickens? In early September we added more to our flock so we currently have twenty-one chickens. I suspect one might be a rooster from the new batch. No, twenty-one chickens are not enough for me. :-) I am a crazy chicken lady and I would like to get six more, specifically 6 more Americana's and two more geese and possible 2-4 turkeys. If I get the six more birds/hens I think that will give a good flock for a couple years. I also want to get a dozen or so birds for eating, we eat a lot of chicken.<br />

Here are the girls and geese enjoying a fresh snack of shredded carrots, lettuce, and a little cabbage one afternoon. I try to make sure, even though they free range a lot, to still give them a varied diet. I want happy birds. I have recently started fermenting their chicken feed as well. So far a week into it and I would say its been a hit. <br />
<br />
So here I am tending my garden one day at a time. Sometimes one day at a time is all I can muster and thank goodness that is all we are expected to do! God doesn't command that we worry about the tomorrows. <br />

I don't mean the good kind of focusing either, I mean the kind that finds all kinds of faults, all kinds of reason why to not do something; all kinds of reasons why that person isn't doing this and this person isn't doing that... Making sure every dot and tittle is in place and every dot and tittle is seen for everyone; everyone but yourself. Yeah, that's me....too busy observing others to see myself.<br />

Those things are hard to come to grips with, but even harder to admit or try to overcome. I admit it. <br />

1Peter 1:22 states, <b>"Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from<sup> </sup>the heart."</b> When I look to make sure you are doing what's right all the time, neglecting my own actions, am I doing this is love? Nope. I can call it lots of things, but I can't pull the wool over God's eyes.<br />

We need to remember that we can only see one side, or what someone is showing the world, we cant see their inner most fears. <span class="text 1Sam-16-7" id="en-NASB-7603">in 1 Samuel the word says, "<b>God <i>sees</i> not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the <span class="small-caps" style="font-variant: small-caps;">Lord</span> looks at the heart</b>.” How often, as we search for all the wrong that a person might be doing, do we neglect to witness? How many times have our own actions been a stumbling block to someone? We can only judge the fruits. We can only judge the fruits that are shown to us. Too often we put our own spin on things and are left wanting. </span><br />

<span class="text 1Sam-16-7" id="en-NASB-7603">Looking to make sure that everyone else is doing their job or what we think they should be doing isn't the actions of a woman after God's heart. Its not the actions of the woman my husband chose to marry, its not the actions of a good mother, or daughter, and it certainly isn't the actions of a child of the King. </span> <br />
<br />
Its the actions of a woman with no purpose or goal. Its the actions of a woman that has too much on her plate and not enough time. Its the actions of a woman whose walk with Christ has not been what it should be. And that has to change. I want my God focus back. I want my directional pointer to be centered on God and I want to be the woman he wants me to be. <br />
<br />
So that's where I am. Bearing it all open and pealing back the layers I try to hide behind. I am not put together, I am hurting, I am seeking, and I am a child of the King. Because I am a child of the King, I have hope. I was given a road map, and all I have to do is open it and ask for directions.<br />

Our community has quite the active little sustainability experiment going on. The Buy Nothing Project (Google it and check to see if there is a chapter in your area) is large and active here on the Key Peninsula. As you know, I am a big supporter of keeping it local and using bartering as a means to people equitable trading resources and needs. <br />
<br />
I have given countless items, many times at the Junk in the Trunk/Bread Day event that happens weekly (though not an official Buy Nothing event), but also at other times. I have shared things I would have likely ended up tossing because Free-cycle is too hard. I have gotten many needs and wants met as well, including--but not limited to-- art paper and clay for Bear, plants for the yard, clothing for Bear, clothing for myself, trays for animal feed, and did I mention toilet paper rolls?<br />

A recent acquisition at JitT was a child's size table. No one else was wanting it and the fellow JitT'er was loading up to go home and I asked her what her plans were for this table..... she said it was mine if I wanted it. SCORE! I knew exactly what I would be able to use the table for. <br />

Our chickens number seven and our geese number two. This doesn't seem like a huge amount, right? I thought the portable yard I made them in mid-June would be great until I could get their more permanent yard and Hen Spa built. I was wrong. These guys are growing little weeds. They love to forage and would rather scratch and dig around in the dirt and grass than much else.<br />
<br />
Another interesting thing is that the hens must be near the poor geese. I'm not 100% convinced that the feeling is mutual for the geese, but suffice it to say that the geese and chickens are forever friends and likely roommates. Time will tell how long this lasts. I'm not sure how it will go when the hen house is built and winter sets in.<br />

The first hen yard was built out of reclaimed/repurposed products (minus the nails and wire) and it went together pretty well. I picked up a chop/miter saw used and it made the work much more simple than using a hand saw or even my skil saw. I was really hopeful time would pan out and they would be able to be in that little pen until late summer or even fall. It was easy enough to move with two people or even one adult and a child. But the birds have grown bigger than I expected at a faster rate. <br />

It was a PVC yard. At first I was entirely incredulous, and laughed when my poor husband showed me the plans. <br />

BUT, as sometimes is the case, minds work and think and then you begin to say, "Why not?" I know one thing was for certain, the birds could not be in the same yard for even one more week. This was a solution that we could do, for not too much, that would satisfy the need and even some wants. <br />
<br />
So I set about gathering supplies. I was not sure how to attach wire, and the wire was still too big that we had; we had spent weeks of the chickens periodically escaping through the chicken wire, and I knew that what I wanted was a smaller wire. So off to the hardware box store. There I discovered a solution that was both lightweight, economical, and small enough for me and one other person to lift and move without too much difficulty and a lot less often. The old one needed moved daily. <br /><br />I set to work on deciding how tall I could make it, how long and wide I could go, and how to attach the wire I found that would suit my needs. I had forgotten to tell my husband that I was now going ahead full steam on his plan and that may have been a mistake. I am 100% certain he would have been able to stem the flow of mishaps, but he works and is gone so much that I didn't want to add more to his plate. <br />

Just after we dropped Bear off at Vacation Bible school this happened as my husband was helping me cut the zip ties.... we were in a hurry because we had a long list of things to get done, and BAM..... God has a way of making you slow down... (I will post the directions to our PVC chicken yard later this week so look for that post!)<br />

We did get the yard done, but not on the day we hopped. The injury to my dear hubs hand was not planned on at all, but it caused us to spend a little more time at home visiting with a long time family friend instead. So I say we got a WIN from it, despite the injury. God knew we would need to be more quiet and he made us do it with no regrets! The chicken yard got done and the girls and geese are OVER JOYED! It got done in GOD's TIME.<br />

<b>What is <i>Nature Journaling</i> to me???? </b> <br />
<br />
Its a way to record what we see, and how we see it.<br />
<br />
Of course there are experts as in all things. One web site describes a nature journal in this way:<br />

<b><i>Like a personal journal or diary, a nature journal is a place to
record our observations and to reflect on them, but unlike a diary, a
nature journal is used specifically to record our observations of, and
thoughts on, nature. Take up nature journaling and you can end up
learning more about nature and about yourself.</i></b><br />
<br />
They used a lot more prettier words, but in essence the same
philosophy. We have played at Nature Journaling for a year in a half.
We still haven't fully arrived, but I think this year might be the year
that it makes sense. Bear is attempting to draw and record what she sees
in nature. What she sees and picks up on may not be what I see and
pick up on, but in my humble opinion, that's 100% ok. In fact, I love
that she is drawing something different from what I am. We
are journaling together you see. What I draw is from my eye and
standpoint what she draws is from her's and that is as it should be. <br />

You can make a Nature Journal very simply, or you can make it a
complicated project in itself. We tend to fall in the more simple
lines. For really young children I love the hard cardboard composition
books that you can buy for under a dollar. If you want to get a bit
more fancy you can buy a non-lined sketch pad or book for under $10 (or
more! the sky--if you let it--could be the limit). Its up to you
what you do, and you can base it on the age of your child. Get
creative, make your own (gotta love pinterest!).... But make it
something you will use. The best Nature Journal is the one that gets
used.<br />

<em><strong>What do you have for journaling?</strong></em><br />

In our nature journal stash I have included pencils, erasers, chalk
pastels, crayons (broken ones work great for rubbings), water colors,
and colored pencils. We often include the things that we have in our
nature bags as well. This can include a ruler, magnifying glass, our
loops, nature identifier books, clear bags, clear specimen cups, etc.
Let your nature bag help you if you want! You can make your journal
stash simple or more expanded, its really up to you and what you want. A
new item we will be adding soon is a backpack easel to encourage more
art as well. Plus it gives mom a place to stash supplies! *smile*
Again, only have what you use and let your own needs be your guide.
Your journaling experience should be uniquely you. <br />

Grab a camera as well. I am convinced that if <strong>Charlotte Mason</strong>
were alive today that she would embrace digital photography. I have
plans to one day include photographs in my journal. Nature journals are
all about learning about the natural world that God created and
enjoying it. Through our desire to enjoy it, we will care for it as we
are commanded as Christians. <br />

Embrace the freedom of time. Being in nature takes time. Take the time
that is needed to really examine the natural world. So many times we
rush through walks and this does a disservice to our children as well as
our own beings. We need to connect just as much as our
children do. At one time this connection was a given, but today we call
playing outside a sterile playground where children play surrounded by
dotting parents carrying hand sanitizer! <br />

your child is older, try something I call Square Foot Nature
Journaling. I have heard it called other things as well, but the basic
premise is that one take small natural stakes, jute twine, and measure
off roughly one square foot of space and observe it for a period of
time, recording in the journal what is seen and ones experiences. I
can't wait to try this. <br />
<br />
In your journal you will want to be sure to include the <strong>date, time, and location of where and what you are observing. </strong>
You might even wish to include the weather to help you record your
observations. Don't wait until the next day to journal about what you
have seen, do it right away. <br />
<br />
Remember that your journal doesn't have to be perfect, just perfectly
you! Let it express you. One mother expressed to me that she enjoyed
going back over the years and seeing the growth she has made as well as
the growth her children have made through the art of "journaling." <br />
<br />
Charlotte Mason had this to say about children in nature and embracing nature; its worth pondering as parents, <em>"every
child has a natural interest in the living things about him which it is
the business of his parents to encourage; for, but few children are
equal to holding their own in the face of public opinion; and if they
see that the things which interest them are indifferent or disgusting to
you, their pleasure in them vanishes, and that chapter in the book of
Nature is closed to them."</em> Do you allow the wonder to infect them or do you look with scorn on dirty fingers and dangling worms? <br />
<br />
Get out there and have some fun and enjoy nature. God created it for us
to love and enjoy. If we do this we will take care of it and make sure
our own children will be able to love and enjoy it as well. Encourage
